Research interests: Early detection of breast cancer and related issues, primarily the classification of breast cancer according to the site of tumor origin and histopathologic-breast imaging correlation with long-term patient outcome.
After obtaining his medical degree from the University of Pécs, Faculty of Medicine, Hungary, he completed his residency in the University hospital of Pécs and served as assistant professor at the Department of Radiology. He defended his PhD at the Academy of Sciences of Hungary in 1978. Dr. Tabár was invited from Hungary by the Kopparberg County Council, Sweden to become one of the leaders of the Two-County Randomized Controlled Trial and served as the Medical Director of the Mammography Department, Falun, Sweden from 1977 until his retirement in 2010. In 1986, he founded the research group Swedish Organized Service Screening Evaluation Group (SOSSEG) with the participation of Prof. Nick Day from Cambridge University, UK, Prof. Stephen W. Duffy from Queen Mary University, UK, Prof. H-H Tony Chen from Taiwan University, Taipei, Prof. Amy Yen, from Taiwan University, Taipei and Prof. Peter B. Dean from University of Turku, Finland.
The screening program started as a scientifically designed, controlled, randomized, population-based trial carried out under the auspices of the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare. His publications related to many aspects of early detection and natural history of breast cancer. Since 1987 service screening has been offered to all women aged 40-69 living in Dalarna (Kopparberg) county, Sweden and since 2010 to all women aged 40-74, therefore our research interest has been extended to the impact of early detection of breast cancer in the entire female population aged 40-74 years.
Dr. Tabár is the member of the Swedish Society of Radiology and the Swedish Society of Medicine, Honorary member of the Finnish and Hungarian Societies of Radiology, Honorary member of the American College of Radiology and the Hungarian Society of Clinical Oncology.
As the President of Mammography Education, Inc., Phoenix, AZ, USA, Dr. Tabár has been the Course director and principal lecturer of more than 500 breast imaging CME courses since 1980 in Europe and since 1985 in North America, South America, India, Asia, Africa, Middle East, Australia and New Zealand.
